Peep! Peep!

in The Sweet Life

I finally got around to taking some pictures of our chicks over the weekend – and a short video, too (scroll down to see). The girls (er, hopefully they are all girls!) are two weeks old now, and you can see that their feathers are beginning to come in and replace that adorable chick fluff. Still pretty stinkin’ cute though, if you ask me! We have not named them yet, so if you have any chicken name ideas I would love to hear them.

1. European style coop, plans $19.99 | 2. The Garden Ark, plans $19.95 | 3. Herb Garden Coop, plans $34.95 | 4. The Garden Coop, plans $19.99 | 5. Eglu Go, $295.00 | 6. Kippen House coop, $1250

Now that we have our girls home, it’s time to get going on building our coop – eep! There are actually lots of great modern coop designs out there, though some are astronomically expensive. Our budget is limited, to say the least, so we will be choosing plans to build our own coop rather than buying a ready-made coop or a kit – we have to factor in the cost of lumber and supplies, but it’s still the most affordable option. You can see six of my favorite designs above – some affordable, some most decidedly not.

And now for the chickies! Here is the Buff Brahma:

She is already my favorite. Such a sweetie! :) The other two were not as patient during their photo shoots, but you can spot them in the video…

Yes, they are eating out of my hand! Already when I say “heeere, chickie chickies” they come running right over. :) The honey colored one is the Buff Brahma, the black one is an Australorp, and the one with a white spot on her head and the beginnings of stripes is a Plymouth Barred Rock. I’m not joking about the name thing – we are taking suggestions, so feel free to chime in!

Have a great Monday, dears! xo Laura

Hello my dears! I am back with a progress update on my Throw Out Fifty Things project. Over the past week, I dove into my bedroom closets, bathroom, and kitchen and oh my, it’s feeling great to see some things go! Are you in the mood to get rid of clutter too? I hope you will join me in whatever way you feel inspired to, and I would love to hear about your progress.

I discovered something interesting as I was knee-deep in Goodwill bags, namely that choosing to be intentional about what I am keeping vs. throwing out is a total game changer. I’ve decluttered plenty of times before, but usually it’s more about making a closet/cupboard/room look better. This time, I am really considering each and every item in my home. Why is it there? How did it get there? Do I love it/use it/need it? And if not, why on earth am I holding onto it so tightly? It’s easy enough to get rid of the obvious junk, I’ve found, but the “nice” stuff tends to stick around, even when you have no use for it – do you find this to be true? I don’t know if it’s guilt, or obligation, or what, but I’m ready to let it go. I want my home to be a reflection of my life now, not how I think it should be and certainly not how someone else thinks it should be!

In the photo above you can see some of my “nice” stuff that I am finally getting rid of. There is a pair of brand-new, never worn knee high Hunter boots. I love the color. I love the whole idea of them. But guess what? I feel weird wearing knee high rubber boots, which means they are never going on my feet. If I don’t get rid of them, they will be sitting in the back of my closet taunting me for the rest of my life. They have to go. What else do we have there? Crystal candlesticks that were a gift from my husband’s work last Christmas. They are perfectly nice candlesticks. But they are really heavy and sharp and they remind me of something Colonel Mustard would use to conk someone on the head with in the library, so they’re out. Then there is the set of towels whose particular shade of pink makes me a little nauseous, a few design books I felt I “should” like but don’t, and a handmade glass dish that is just not me. There was also a bag – a really nice one, quite expensive – that I got during a time of great stress and upset in my life. I realized that just looking at it made me feel a little uptight, so out it’s going – on to another home, where someone else will love and use it.

But guess what? There were some buried treasures in there, too! See that tray in the photo above? I remember the day I found it so clearly. Ben and I were living in Santa Cruz at the time, just driving back from a gorgeous summer camping trip in Big Basin, and we stopped at a little antique shop in the mountains. This little tray immediately caught my eye, and I scooped it up for about ten bucks. It looks handmade, don’t you think? I imagine it graced a family table in a little mountain home for many years before finding its way to me. I think I’ll clean it up a bit and find a better spot to keep it – now that it’s unburied from the back of my pantry!

Speaking of the pantry, it saddened me to have to actually throw out so much food. I guess we just don’t bake very often, because all of our flours and things were expired! Gah. The kitchen took me the longest by far, and to be honest I still have to work at it a bit more. Yeah, I haven’t even touched under the sink. But all of the other cupboards and drawers are cleared, and I can honestly say everything that’s left has a real purpose in our kitchen and sees regular use. The pantry is looking pretty good now, but I need to pick up another flat of canning jars to store staples, and I realized I would love to be able to listen to my favorite podcasts while I’m cooking, so some sort of ipod dock is on my wish list, too.

I promised I would share my “scorecard” of items I am getting rid of, so here it is for Week 1:

  • In the bedroom, I am letting go of 3 pink towels, 4 pairs of shoes, 3 bags, 1 set of pajamas, 1 old blanket, 2 old calendars, and 1 bathing suit. Total: 6 items (remember, each “type” of thing only counts as 1!)
  • In the bathroom, I chucked 8 old travel size toiletries, 3 bottles of expired medication, 4 bottles of separated nail polish, and 4 crumbly eye shadows, and 2 unflattering lipsticks. Total: 4 items.
  • In the kitchen, I am getting rid of 4 unopened (expired) marinades, 3 bags of expired flour, assorted takeout chopsticks and paper plates, 2 sets of coasters we never use, 4 cooking tools we never use, 1 flimsy baking sheet, 2 chipped plates, 1 chipped glass. Total: 6 items, bringing my grand total to 16 items…only 34 to go! :)

This week was exhilarating at the start, and a bit of a mess by the end. I am accepting the fact that a) things will get worse before they get better (as evidenced by the boxes and bags strewn about the house) and b) it’s okay to be imperfect. I’ll be tacking on the fridge and under the sink cupboard onto next week’s list – stay tuned to see how I do with my living room, dining room, and basement!

Hi friends! Today I have happy homes on the brain. Unabashedly cheerful, colorful, creative, love-filled homes – do you know the kind I mean? Maybe you have a friend with a home like this – or maybe your home is like this? Prints and colors covering all, art everywhere, along with signs of a well-lived life. As I mentioned recently, I am craving more color and pattern in my own home, so I’ve been keeping an eye out for homes to inspire changes of my own.

One such home is artist Kelly Rae Roberts’s house, featured in a tour this week on Design Mom. Are you familiar with Kelly Rae? She is an amazing artist, author, teacher, and writes a popular blog as well. She’s a busy lady! Oh, and she is a Mama. I just love her home – the colors and artwork blew me away. Take this nook above, for example. It’s in their renovated attic bedroom, and the walls are painted this amazing shade of blue, the vintage dresser, vibrant print chair, tangerine rug, and large painting add up to one happy corner. Wouldn’t you love to curl up here with a great book?

I have my eye on all of the wall colors in Kelly Rae’s home, in fact. I’m loving the soft dove gray and all of the luminous blues. And who wouldn’t love a crystal chandy in the dining room? Right? Yes, yes, so many things to love here. What is catching your eye in Kelly Rae’s home?

Oh my, oh my, and then there is dear Melissa’s home, also featured on Design Mom (with photos by Marichelle). I am being completely honest when I say I squealed with delight when I saw this. Art is everywhere. Everywhere! If you read Melissa’s blog (which you should, of course) you know she has the best eye for Etsy finds and it shows all over the place. There are tons of ideas in Melissa’s house for creative ways to display children’s art, which I love. And again with the wall colors! Can you tell I am dying to paint my house? ;)

Ooh, and did I mention all of the burlap? I think, Melis, you just inspired me to go pick up a roll the next time I’m at the garden store and cover a few big bulletin boards! Oh yes.

Just a few more snippets to share, this one is from Carolyn Gavin’s home tour on Design Sponge. How great is that chalkboard base to a kitchen island? Love the giant piece of art just visible around the bend in the dining room, too.

And last but certainly not least, I fell for this garden nook from Jared Frank and Sam Jacober of Topsy Design, featured on Design Sponge. Amazing, right? I think it’s a great idea to scavenge for cool furniture at flea markets – even (or especially?) pieces like these that may not have been intended to be used outdoors just look all the more magical. And the patina of weathered wood and metal adds so much character. And come on, who can resist a hammock? With tassels, for crying out loud.

I really hope you have enjoyed the homes I chose to share today. Are you feeling the love? I’m hoping to translate some of the happy, optimistic vibe of these spaces into my own home this year – fresh wall color (perhaps), new artwork (hopefully) and a few burlap-covered boards (for sure). Have a great day, my dears! xo Laura

Good morning, friends! How was your weekend? We celebrated Easter here in a low-key way, a small egg hunt happened in the living room, out to brunch, then family time in the garden – I planted 200 peas! Oh my. I may have gotten just a bit carried away.

This morning I am feeling inspired by the exuberant color and layers of pattern shown in the homes in the spring issue of Heart Home, so I thought I would share a few favorites here. I often notice in UK design mags and even bloggers homes that people seem to have more fun with design than here in the states. There seems to be more color and pattern, and less concern about matching. I think it’s fantastic.

Some things I am loving: pink pompom trim, Cath Kidston floral prints, quirky art, fresh flowers. I admit granny crochet is not quite my style, though I love looking at it other homes. Is this your cup of tea at all? Perhaps you would like something more like this:

Nautical patterns and art feels fresh when done in whimsical, midcentury inspired prints. I think this would be just perfect for decorating a seaside cottage – or pretending your home is a seaside cottage, anyway! Ha.

You can read the full issue and learn more about these creative spaces in the spring issue of Heart Home magazine, but for now I would love to hear your thoughts on bringing a bit more fun and color into the home. To be honest, I am growing quite bored with all of the white in my home, and adding color/pattern is something of a decorating goal of mine this year. :)

Hi friends! I’ve been reading an inspiring book lately, it’s called Throw Out Fifty Things by Gail Blanke – have you heard of it? It strikes me as smarter than the average home organizing book, one that even those of you who think you’re not into this sort of thing might get into. The basic concept of the book is that once you have thrown out 50 things – both physical clutter and emotional garbage – you will be on such a roll that you will simply keep going and nothing will be able to stop you! Gail likens her approach to life coaching/clutter clearing to that of Michelangelo, chiseling away the marble to reveal the sculpture hiding within. Sounds good to me. Yesterday I decided to dive in, and as I was reaching for more crap-ola at the back of my closet I realized some of you might want to join me. Because digging weird stuff out of your drawers and closets is totally fun and worth comparing notes on, right? ;)

So, here is what I am thinking. We will take on this challenge as laid out in the book (no need to purchase it, I’ll be sure to outline enough to follow along), beginning with the physical junk in our homes, moving on to the clutter (both physical and emotional) in our professional life/office, ending by refining our vision of ourselves.

The Method:

  • A group of similar items only counts as one thing, so those 200 back issues of Martha Stewart Living you finally decided to chuck (wait! why would you do that??) only count as 1 item.
  • If the thing in question weighs you down or makes you feel bad about yourself, throw it out, give it away, sell it, let it go.
  • If you are agonizing over whether to keep or get rid of something, stop. Throw it out.
  • Be brave! This is your life, and you get to decide what you surround yourself with. Be intentional about what you are keeping and why. Don’t put off that decision by shoving it to the back of the closet one more time. Do it now and you’ll be so, so happy you did.

The Schedule:

  • Week One, April 7 – 13: We tackle the bedroom, bathroom, and kitchen.
  • Week Two, April 14 – 20: Time to move on to the dining room, living room, and attic/basement.
  • Week Three, April 21 – 27: Garage/storage, office.
  • Week Four, April 28 – May 4: Clearing the mental mess; making a vision for the future.

For each area we tackle, keep a running scorecard of exactly what you are throwing out. You can share your list and/or photos of your items or space on your own blog/flickr/etc. and link to it, or simply share your progress in the comments section each week.

I’m excited! Are you excited? I do hope you will join me. If you do, you can rest assured that in one month’s time your home will be finally cleared of clutter, your personal “brand” refined, and you will be armed with a fresh sense of purpose and vision for your future. I will check in this coming week with a few tips and words of encouragement for tackling the week 1 areas (bedroom, bathroom, kitchen) as well as sharing some of my own progress in words and pictures.

Okay, I’ve got to go now because there is a junk drawer over there with my name on it.

xoxo Laura
