Weddings

Good morning dear ones! I am excited today because Bixby’s “Nana” is visiting, so today we will be planning all sorts of fun things to do during her visit :) In the meantime, I wanted to share some gorgeous photos from one of my favorite wedding sites, Style Me Pretty. My own wedding in ’05 was a mostly DIY affair, and I had such fun planning every little detail. In fact, I still get kind of bummed out that I don’t have a reason to pick up Martha Stewart Weddings anymore! lol. To satisfy my cravings, I pulled some of my favorite images of wedding details with a casual, offhand sort of elegance. Let’s take a look, I think you will find that many of these ideas easily translate to everyday decorating and casual parties…

I love that first image, what a creative use for a wood slice! Jam jars, plain linen table cloths, eating outdoors, faded floral dishes, tiny vases of tulips cut short, single blooms in jars and bottles, writing on vintage windowpanes, repurposing wood as planters…these wedding details have my creative wheels turning, what about you?

Happy Friday bloggy friends! I am especially excited for this weekend because my sweetie has Monday off, so we get three days off together, hooray! I will not be posting here on Monday so I can spend some time with my little family, but if you miss me ;) you can be sure to find me on Pinterest, Facebook or Twitter. Over the weekend I am hoping to go to the Italian neighborhood here in Providence for cappuccinos and cake and to pick up some ingredients for dinner at an Italian deli/market I love, plus go for a few walks, watch movies, and finalize our trip plans for California.

What are you doing? Any of you perchance planning a wedding? If so, consider yourself a lucky duck because Anthropologie is now doing weddings! Their wedding attire biz (which just made its debut on Valentine’s Day) is called BHLDN; have you peeked at it yet? I love it, it’s totally Anthro but kicked up a notch, and they have everything from gowns and bridesmaid dresses to jewelry, shoes, coverups, hair adornments and lingerie. Now where was this when I was planning my wedding back in ’05?

Though I must say, as wild as I am for Anthropologie I wouldn’t want to change a thing about my wedding attire. I am still madly in love with my gown, which was handmade in a tiny shop in San Francisco, and my veil made by my Mom, vintagey-looking silk DKNY dresses I scored on sale for my bridesmaids…Sorry, I could ramble on forever about this – I was one of those crazy people who actually loved planning my own wedding! Ahem. Back to Anthro…

One feature I really enjoyed was the Nuptials of Yesteryear section, which holds an amazing selection of vintage wedding photos for inspiration (and laughs). So fun!

As far as I can tell, they are online-only at the moment, but how amazing would it be if they eventually opened storefronts? I would love to see that. Check out BHLDN for more, including a pin board area (currently under construction) that will house a wealth of inspiration images for color palettes, style icons, etc., for customers to pull from to create their own personalized inspiration boards.

Have a happy weekend!! xoxo Laura

There are a few things that always make me happy, and Saipua makes three of them: gorgeous flowers, pretty soaps, and yummy scented candles. This small, family-run business based in the Hudson Valley of New York makes handmade soaps in small batches using natural ingredients, then bundles them up in beautiful printed papers. With innovative scents like saltwater-rosemary-patchouli and coffee-mint soaps, and cedarmoss or lilac-violet-cucumber soy candles, any of the little goodies from Saipua would make lovely little gifts, don’t you think?

They also create gorgeous bouquets of fresh, seasonal flowers, which are available in their Brooklyn shop, and for weddings and special events. A little bird told me that they will also be designing the flowers for an upcoming Sunday Suppers class, which looks like so much fun, you must check it out if you live in the NYC area. Oh, and just look at that sweet little bird vase – I would love to have that little beauty sitting on my desk right now!

flowers-dec08-11On their website I also learned that Saipua comes from the Finnish word for soap – how about that? And in fact, they do make a few traditional sauna-inspired soaps, packed with bracing essential oils like fir needle. Goodness, imagine how delicious their shop must smell! Between the candles, the fresh flowers, and all of the lovely soaps, oh, my!

Check out the Saipua website to order soaps & candles, or to inquire about floral designs

On Friday evening, my sweetheart came home with a bundle of deliciously fragrant lilacs. As the scent filled the room, I was reminded of our wedding day….

I carried a bouquet of creamy roses, delicate lily of the valley, and lilacs. And every time their fragrance wafted up to me, I felt calm. Serene. It reminded me that I was there for a beautiful reason, and there was no need to worry about any of the minor disasters that undoubtedly happen at every wedding. That was for someone else to worry about. The flowers were like a magical balm, leading me through the day on a scented cloud.

picture-19As some of you may know, my husband and I are looking to purchase our first home. Well, on Sunday we went to see a house. A soft spring breeze floated in by way of a charming screened-in porch. Light streamed through the windows, and though tiny, the bungalow had a spacious, open feel. And in the backyard were lilacs. Three huge, blooming lilacs. And lily of the valley. We’re going to the bank today… wish us luck!

I happened upon Fanciful Design the other day, and wanted to share this delightful little shop with you. Sweet handmade paper creations in shades of cream fill the shop, alongside fabric art and gorgeous handmade books…

I noticed that many of the items would make unique additions to a wedding ~ like the favors (top right) made from the pages of vintage French books and filled with either tea or treats ~ how charming is that? And how about using one of the vintage number books (lower left) as a guest book?
