Color Palette

Good morning my dears! I’d like to introduce a new occasional column called Color Palette, where I will be matching up paint colors with lovely interiors and other inspiring images. Sounds fun, right?

For our first color palette post, I chose this dreamy home from Light Locations, spied over on Mrs. French’s blissful blog. Silvery grays and pale creams give the impression you are floating in a cloud, while the worn woods and those gorgeous herringbone floors keep things rooted. All paint colors shown above are Farrow & Ball: I would use Skylight on the walls, Cornforth White on the ceiling, and Strong White on the trim; Skimming Stone or Elephant’s Breath would be lovely on painted furniture.

Again, lots of white and pale, cloud-like colors here, but my eye was drawn to the chippy painted stools in greenish blues pulled up to the farmhouse table – lovely! All paint colors from Farrow & Ball.

In the children’s room we have a more spirited palette of pale pink, crisp white, bold raspberry, and green apple. Fun and fresh. Paint colors are all from Farrow & Ball, except Blushing Red from Benjamin Moore.

1. Love Print | 2. Cameroon Juju Hat | 3. Pine Pedestal Table | 4. Linen Wrapped Pots | 5. Farmhouse Dining Table

I couldn’t help but also round up a few of my favorite things from this space, from that popular Love print and Juju hat wall hanging to English country classics like nice pots and sturdy tables. I hope your week is off to a fabulous start! xo Laura

p.s. – Were you expecting a Saturday Crafternoon post today? Sadly, I had a stomach bug all weekend and was unable to work on my painting, but I’m hoping to spend some time on it today. Stay tuned, I will still be posting + hosting a link party this week!

Love Your Home

February 1, 2013

in Color, Design & Decor

Happy February, my sweets! This month we will be exploring ways to love your home more than ever – from making gutsy style choices you love, to personalizing your space, sharing stories of first homes, childhood homes, and learning to appreciate the home you have as it is right now. If you haven’t done so yet, you might want to sign up for my new Monthly Newsletter (or the Mini News for pint-size design + stories) to keep updated; the first issue will be going out this weekend!

The space I would like to share with you today comes from The Cross Design in Vancouver, and I swear, my heart started doing little flips when I spotted it on Houzz. I think we all have those triggers that make our hearts beat faster – a certain color, a pattern, a shape – and knowing yours is a great step towards creating a home that you adore. I don’t know about you, but I don’t just want to like my home, I want to be madly in love with it!

If you hadn’t already guessed, I would say one of my loves is peony pink. This slightly over-the-top hue cheers me up like nobody’s business. But as I look around my home right now, I can hardly find anything of this particular color. Why, oh, why, have I been depriving myself of this small joy?

If you have a favorite hue or pattern, or other splendid thing you love, but have not brought into your home, perhaps you understand. I think it’s easy to get a little too hung up on what others might think, of making a mistake, of having to repaint over a color that turned out to be hideous, and on and on…until nothing happens. I’d like to take this as a chance to encourage you (and me!) to just go for it. If there is something decorating-wise you’ve been debating for ages and you know it would make you really happy, do it. If you love a color, go buy a pot of paint and paint something. It doesn’t have to be a wall! Paint a chair, your table legs, or the inside of a cabinet.

I am going to begin by rounding up the small pink objects I do have spread about my house (like this one on Instagram) so I can enjoy them daily. Next? Hm…there may be a bit of pink and mint-tinted chalkboard paint in my dining chairs’ future… xo Laura

It’s midwinter here in New England, and the landscape outside my window is looking a bit bleak, which has left me craving color and print like never before. So I was thrilled when I came across the portfolio of photographer Rachel Whiting: it’s positively bursting with color! Come along, let’s have a peek…

The patchwork floral print wall may be what first caught my eye, but it’s that hot pink rug on the floor that really set my heart racing. It looks like one from the color reform series at ABC home – overdyed to give that super-saturated hue. I’d love to splurge on a small one to wake up my living room!

Layering colorful Liberty floral prints is a quick way to bring a bit of cheer to a room, and I find myself especially drawn to this look when outdoors is dreary and bare. It’s like bringing a blooming garden indoors.

Feeling a bit color-shy? Why not treat yourself to an armful of fresh blooms? Cutting and arranging them is quite relaxing, and examining nature’s color palette is a great way to spark ideas for your interior. Don’t feel limited to vases – some of the most charming vessels are tea cups, sugar bowls, and pitchers, so raid those kitchen cabinets!

I wish I could jump into the pictures above, with their overstuffed armchairs, painted furniture, and cozy quilts, don’t you? You can go drool more at Rachel Whiting’s portfolio site. Enjoy the rest of your day, my dears! xo Laura

Good morning and happy Monday my dears! Happy Monday? Yes, that’s right, I like to make a point of celebrating the first day in a fresh new week rather than dread it. I’ve found that just by deciding to have a good day and a pleasant start to the week I usually can. If you need a bit of perking up this morning, I dare say you’ve come to the right place. : ) Today I have a post bursting with visual inspiration from Car Moebel, a German site I love drooling over – sadly, all I can do is drool, because shipping furniture here would be crazy expensive. But come along and we can drool together, and discuss how to freshen up our homes and tap into our personal sense of style in 2013.

Let’s start with color palettes, shall we? For spring, I am feeling drawn to rooms that feel linked to each other with a pale wash of color on walls and floors, and grounded with charcoal, slate, or black in the form of sofas and rugs. Using the same treatment on floors, walls, or even windows throughout your home can help everything hang together, allowing you the freedom to build on it with layers of color. In the living room shown above, I love the contrast of the dark sofa on light floors, though alone it would feel much too stark. The patterned blue-gray rug provides a sort of bridge between the light and dark – a great tip because so often a rug can make the room! Then you are free to layer away with colorful cushions, poufs, throws, vases, artwork, etc.

Beyond color, I would like to see more spaces meant for living and not built around our tech devices. We all use our laptops, smartphones, tablets, and on and on, but at home I feel it is so important to preserve some spaces that are meant for real human (and furry friend) contact. Cozy corners like the one above invite you to put down the keypad and sink into the cushions instead with a great book or stack of fresh magazines, pour tea, and catch up with a friend.

I would also love to see more kitchens design for really enjoying and hanging out in. I appreciate my home, so I am really not complaining…but if I were the one who designed it, I would not have chosen granite counters and closed cupboards! A bit of freestanding furniture and painted wood in the kitchen makes things feel so much friendlier, don’t you think? Luckily, there is always something that can be done with accessories to bring more of the mood you desire into a room, even if you can’t change it all. Colorful Turkish tea towels, potted herbs in the windowsill, woven baskets for storage, and a worn wood step stool or chipped vintage cafe chairs are easy additions.

I am always a sucker for Moroccan style, anything from tile patterns to hammered silver, tiny tea glasses, or leather slippers – these things have my name written all over them! This little scene caught my eye because it looks so inviting, don’t you agree? I wish I could plunk all of it down in a sunny corner of my living room and settle in for a little snack and fresh mint tisane.

Proper storage is so key, and ideally you have a good balance between closed and open storage. We all have things that no amount of styling can make look good, right? Ha. So for that, closets and closed cabinets are your friend. Of course in our petite 1920′s house we don’t have nearly enough of those, so it’s a constant process of editing and giving away that keeps the place from getting overstuffed. But every room needs balance, and part of that comes from what you choose to leave out on display – what is arranged on your open shelves, in glass-front cabinets, on counters, tables, and the like. Flexible storage like the piece above (it’s on casters!) is great because it can be used in countless rooms, holding dishes in the kitchen, books in the living room, or linens in the bedroom.

And as for bedrooms, I prefer to keep this space really quiet and peaceful, with a collection of items that thrills the senses – lovely smooth sheets, fluffy blankets, freshly cleaned floors, a shelf of favorite books, a place to keep your mug of coffee or tea, and soft lighting. What about you? I’d love to hear about what has been catching your eye lately – did any of the images in this post speak to you? If so, why?

You can find out more about all of the things shown here on the Car Moebel site; they carry some of my favorite brands, like TineK Home and House Doctor, RICE, and more.

PSST: In case you missed it, we are running a giveaway right now for 2 beautiful prints from artist (and Lolalina sponsor) Anna See!! Go enter right away! : ) xo Laura

Good morning my sweets! My weekend was packed with crafting and decorating, tree-trimming and cocoa-sipping, and I’m beat! But in the best way. :) In the midst of all of the gift-making madness, I enjoyed taking a little break with my tea to browse dear Leslie’s Instagram stream. It is filled with wonderful color and crafting inspiration, and my quick tip to you today is to take a short break with something yummy to drink, and fill yourself up with visual inspiration.

I am so completely smitten with this picture, that “cozy” sign warms my heart. I’m nearly positive this was taken in a shop, but it brought to mind something I think is quite important: surrounding yourself with images and words with themes that are meaningful, comforting, and uplifting to you. For me, I find myself drawn most often to images of houses, birds, the colors aqua and pink, and words relating to warmth, coziness, and love. Yes, it’s all a bit touchy-feely, but that’s the great thing about our own homes…they are ours to decorate and adorn as we see fit.

I find it delightful to catch up with some of my favorite bloggers and online friends on Instagram to see what they are up to, don’t you? I admit I am far behind the times, since I am not on Instagram myself (yet) but still, for now, I enjoy soaking up inspiration from others. Taking quick snapshots with the intention of sharing them online immediately can help focus your attention on the small moments of beauty that can otherwise be easily missed.

If you are in the mood for a little experiment, why not make a point of looking for a certain color, letter, shape, or theme as you go about your day, and snap pictures of what you find? This can be a great way to quickly collect many images for an inspiration board showing a color palette you love, printed and tacked up in a grid as wall art, or just as a way to sharpen your senses and hone your creative edge.

Before I go, I also have to mention the latest from 24 Merry Days: tomorrow is my giveaway, so be sure to stop by tomorrow and enter. I can hardly wait to tell you what it is!! And right now there are two giveaways going on at House of Earnest – one prize from Ferm Living and another from Son of a Sailor, woohoo! xoxo Laura
