When I started blogging more than four years ago, I could never have imagined where it would lead me. I knew I wanted to make a change, and that I wanted to write and support myself through my own creativity, but beyond that was a bit hazy. So I just started writing my blog daily, and after a year I was contacted by an editor who said they would love to have me write a monthly product column for their site. I was thrilled! Looking back, that was the turning point, bringing my dream of being paid to do what I love to life.
Since then, I’ve built up to writing three columns each week for Houzz, plus monthly articles for Home Made Simple, and several other sites and companies. And now, starting later this summer…I will be officially be writing and blogging full-time. This is such a dream come true for me, and I am equally excited and nervous to be taking this step. Generating 6-8 articles each week for Houzz, plus a few new commitments for other sites is definitely making me gulp. After all, I do have a soon-to-be three year old at home, and we are still scrambling to find enough child care to cover my work time come fall. But I’m also pinching myself…within a few months, between this site and my other work, my income should be surpassing what I ever made as a teacher, and I am doing exactly what I want to be doing!
You’ve probably noticed that I haven’t been blogging here nearly as much as usual, and that’s because with Bixby out of school for the summer and no other child care, I’ve been struggling to keep up with everything. It’s probably going to be light posting for a few more months — but that’s not to say I haven’t been giving this blog a lot of thought! As I transition into full-time work, I also am planning to begin slowly working to create more original content for Lolalina, and I have a complete site redesign in the works.
I would love to hear your input on what you would love to see on this site in the future. It’s my feeling that with so much inspiration available on Pinterest and the like, it makes sense for blogs to move “back to the basics” of blogging — sharing stories. I don’t know about you, but I am getting a little tired of so many blogs trying to be like magazines…and I hope I don’t sound snarky for saying that, because I don’t mean to be. It’s just that it seems people (including me) can be a little nervous or shy about sharing their own stories, wisdom, and photography. It may not be perfect, but I really do believe that each of us has something worthwhile to share, and I will be trying to share more of my own voice here.
It’s funny, when I had the business cards made that you see in the photo above, I listed myself as “Laura Gaskill, writer”…yet that was before I had been paid a dime for my writing! I think sometimes, if you know what you are meant to do, you just have to own it and go for it. Looking back, on the one hand I have not made some of the wisest choices. I would never recommend to anyone else that they quit their job before they have other paid work ready to go. But somehow (quite painfully at times) I have managed to make it work. Staying home with Bixby as a baby, writing at night and during naps, saving every penny…no, it has not been easy, and it still isn’t. But I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
