Yesterday evening as I went into the backyard to call the chickens in for the night, feed in hand, they seemed a bit more excited than usual. Rather than doing their usual comedy routine of ducking in and out of the coop (and me chasing them), they trotted right in. I opened the nesting box, and lo and behold, right in the center of the nest was one perfect brown egg. I literally shrieked when I saw it! Bixby was pretty darned excited, too. In fact, I think he said something like, “The chickens laid a special egg for me!” :)
Isn’t it beautiful? I can’t begin to tell you how wonderfully gratifying it feels to pull an actual egg from our backyard – after months of raising these ladies from chicks, predator-proofing their coop, plus the daily feeding, watering and general fawning over them – just, wow. I wonder if there will be another egg today!
p.s. – It was delicious. The best egg I’ve ever had.
