Inspiring Handmade Home: Pi’lo

Oh my, oh my. As soon as I flipped open the first page of this month’s issue of Covet Garden and saw who was featured, I knew I was going to be in for a treat, and it did not disappoint. Shot by the talented photographers Donna Griffith and Naomi Finlay, the story covers couple Heather Shaw and Josh Gray and their two boys – Heather being the founder and designer behind one of the most beautiful shops around, p i ‘ l o. Have you seen it? It’s one of my favorites!

In the bedroom, I think I can safely say I want to lift every last thing out of here and lower it into my own bedroom! Isn’t that rich chocolate accent wall magnificent? And the Indian block-printed bedspread and linens, linen shades, and more painted floors.

Heather authors a lovely blog as well – that’s her, above in her hall. I think what I love most about Heather and Josh’s home is that every little corner feels special; there is no place too small for a handmade treasure or luscious textile to be draped, pinned, or hung. Here, I love the glossy painted floors, fluffy white garlands, photo display, and large mirror leaned against the wall.

Oh my, and in the living room? This is making me seriously rethink my choice in sofa/armchair pairing. Black linen? Genius! It looks just as chic as white, but sooo much more practical in a home with rambunctious boys. And there is more of that block-print, which is hands-down one of my favorite patterns. I wonder…I’m not 100% sure, but it looks like it might be from Les Indiennes.

Being a textile artist, Heather naturally has the most wonderful collections of textiles treasures, and they are displayed with creativity all around the house. Looking at her lovingly collected stacks of embroidered, embellished, and vintage textiles makes me so happy.

Of course part of what makes this house so peaceful and lovely is the restrained color palette: putty, white, black, palest blue, gray, chocolate, and natural wood. A hint of pinks in the textiles gives the space a happy little lift.

You can see the rest of Heather’s home tour inĀ Covet Garden – it was hard to restrain myself from posting all of the photos, but I did, so there is still much more loveliness and inspiration to be found, along with Heather’s interview and some bonus features at the end that are not to be missed.

Sigh. Homes like this remind me about all of the good, beautiful things in life. I hope you’ve enjoyed this home tour as much as I have…I’d love to hear what you think! Have a beautiful day, my sweets. xo Laura

A beautiful home with a relaxing vibe throughout – love it! I used to have a black wall behind my bed and it was so cosy. Cheers from London!

Love the big comfy chair in the kitchen — great for waiting time while cooking.
