Fresh Decorating Ideas from Heart Home

Hello my sweets! Happy Monday! I’m not always excited to greet Monday morning, but today I feel a bit more energized and inspired than usual. My weekend was jam-packed full of summer goodness, from the farmer’s market on Saturday morning to a long walk followed by ice cream and a swim on Sunday. Ah… Plus, I have a lot in store to look forward to this week, starting with a friend who’s coming over later to do a short video interview with me – exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time! I found a heaping bunch of inspiration in the latest issue of Heart Home Magazine, the lovely online publication from the UK, and I’ve pulled some of my favorite shots from the issue to share today, along with the decorating tips they are sparking. I hope you enjoy this peek as much as I did!

First things first: I am having a major crush on this hallway! The white walls, pale gray floors, woven rugs, and light fixtures work together to create the feeling you are on the inside of a cloud; so light and lovely. You know I love white floors, but this pale gray is pulling a close second in my book. Also of note, it’s a fantastic idea to hang matching light fixtures throughout an enfilade or down a long hall where more than one light is needed – it unifies the space. Let’s take a closer look at the end of that hall:

If you are going to do hooks, I say go big like the ones shown here. Teeny little decorative hooks will drive you crazy when you actually try to hang your coat and it slides right off. For jewelry, sure, use the teensy pretty hooks – but for practical use in the hall, big simple hooks do the job. Plus, if you match them to your wall color, they will all but disappear when not in use.

Moving on to a space for the little ones, I adore the mix of pure white with beigey-cream and palest blue-gray on the floors, stairs, walls, and trim, it just feels so relaxing. And then how can you resist adding colorful buntings and garlands, pretty fabric-covered boxes, and handmade quilts? Such a charming room, I imagine any little girl would be delighted to call this space her own!

I always love seeing how Ikea can be worked into creative and interesting homes, don’t you? I’ve had my eye on the locker-style cabinet above for quite some time now – it looks like such a useful storage piece, one you could put just about anywhere. I’d love one for my basement to store Bixby’s art + craft supplies in.

If you have a lot of mixed surfaces in your home – bricks, plaster, wood, etc., and want to give things a cleaner look, I am all in favor of white paint as they have done here. The really simple styling drew me in, too. The little things…a vintage mirror, tiny posy of flowers, a wooden shoe form, vintage radio and bottle of perfume…that’s what makes me happy. :)

I admit, looking at these spaces is making me want to run down to the hardware store and stock up on paint in dreamy pastels and misty hues, and paint everything from my walls and floors to cabinets. But, (sigh) I will resist for now.

You can read the full issue of Heart Home Magazine to find out more about the spaces shown here (and see much, much more loveliness!) xoxo Laura
