Does the sight of a well-organized set of shelves makes your heart go pitter-pat? I know it does me, and judging from the big response to a recent column I wrote for for Houzz called Clutter Clearing 101, it’s obvious I am not alone in my interior organization obsession! The String Shelf is a Swedish company specializing in shelving, and they have some of the most gorgeous organizing and styling ideas I have seen in some time. Let’s take a gander and get inspired, shall we?
I love that they offer a combination of open and closed storage – this is so key! As much as I adore open shelving, there are some things that are simply too unattractive to display. You know, extra power cords, messy paperwork, that jumble of plastic kids toys, and on and on. But having a certain amount left open invites curation, and can make your space feel larger to boot.
There are a few interesting features here I haven’t seen too often, as well – such as the slanted wire shelves for book display. I love that! There are some great styling tips here, too: mixing horizontal & vertical stacks of books with magazines, plain white or kraft paper storage boxes, framed artwork, a glass cloche or two, and small sculpture or pottery is a sure bet for a stylish arrangement. Bonus points for keeping items in the same color family!
So, tell me what you think: are you a fan of String and open shelving? Or do you prefer to have everything hidden away in pretty cupboards? Or a mix?

I used to have lots of open shelves in the houses I lived in…not anymore! They are a pain to dust and keep tidy, and there’s a fine line between “creative styling” and clutter…now I prefer to have most of my stuff tucked away, with just a few things on display.

Love the String system but it’s so very expensive in Australia!! I was looking at it for the kids’ playroom, but I thought they would damage it getting things in and of it. Love the combination of open and closed shelving! Thanks or the post!
Mary Anne P – eep, I’m sure it is! Gorgeous though, isn’t it? I bet you can steal the general look and pull together your own set of open and closed shelving! xo Laura
