I have been dying to share these images with you because I felt so inspired by them and I hope you do, too. I treated myself to a copy of Inside Out Magazine last week (the November/December 2011 issue), which is something I don’t often do. It’s an import from Australia, so the cover price is pretty hefty. But I am telling you, this one was worth every penny! I am just trying to decide if I should keep it whole or cut it apart and use the images in a new mood board.
A few things that caught my eye: An editorial on using layers of washed linen in the bedroom was utterly gorgeous (styled by Leesa O’Reilly and photographed by John Laurie). I really want to redo my bedroom with new paint and linens, so this was pushing me on a bit! I also loved the New York loft home of Andrew Corrie & Harriet Maxwell Macdonald, owners of über-inspiring homewares shop Ochre. It is all about easy elegance, with soft tones of pink, putty, amethyst, taupe, and charcoal, luxe fabrics and sculptural pottery; Ditte Isager did a beautiful job with the styling and photography. There was also a lovely feature on Australian expat photographer Carla Coulsen’s colorful flat in Paris; you can see photos on Carla’s blog.
Oh, but we haven’t even discussed the neon yet! This was the cover story, and it was exactly what I am craving now: a little fluorescent and electric yellow, green, and pink, zipping through rooms filled with lots of white, soft pastels, and light wood. They got this one just right. The story was styled by Vanessa Colyer Tay and shot by photographer Sam McAdam. Oh, and see those cool, modern looking flower vases? That is an easy DIY project using PVC pipe from the hardware store! Want to try it at home?
Here is what you will need:
- PVC faucet tees, sockets, couplings, and end caps that fit together
- PVC pipe cement
- Small paint brush & acrylic paint
Simply glue the pipe pieces together in a way that pleases you, allow to dry thoroughly, then paint the exterior with 3 coats of acrylic. It sounds so easy, I really want to try this myself!
What about you? Did you pick up this issue too? Any favorites? I’d love to hear from you, xo Laura

Hi Laura, great to see you love this mag! I’m an avid reader of your blog from Australia, and Inside Out is one of my favourites. The new edition arrived on my doorstep this week, it is amazing. You will love!
Ooh, I can’t wait! I’m just sorry it takes so long for them to arrive here in the States! :) xo Laura
Aussie magazines seem to be full of gorgeous interiors! I like the pastels, not too sure about the pipes though…

Ha ha Cristina, yes the pipes are a little out there, aren’t they? I do think they’re fun, but I see what you mean… xo Laura
Hi Laura,
Thank you for your lovely and generous blog post on our Nov/Dec issue! I’m glad it gave you such inspiration, particularly Vanessa’s DIY vases story. Love the way you’ve presented the issue on your blog – it looks wonderful. (Also, thanks for shelling out for the issue, it is “hefty”, as you say, to get a mag shipped all the way from Australia, but we are now available on Zinio if you like having a digital option.)
Thanks again and all the best,
Lee Tran
