Today it is hot, hot, hot here! I thought we could discuss summer plans, work procrastination, and ways to inspire and get motivated even when the sun is blazing. Sound good? As we talk I also want to share these stunning photos with you by Victoria Pearson, they are reminding me of some of my favorite bits about summer – leisurely breakfasts enjoyed by a sunny window, fresh cut flowers from the garden or market, and simple cabin or cottage getaways. It’s funny, I never thought of myself as a summer person while I lived in California; but now that I live on the east coast and must deal with the changing seasons, I have come to savor these long, hot summer days. We are planning a camping trip in the woods a few weeks from now, and perhaps some time at the beach or lakeside later this summer. What about you? Are you making any plans for the summer? I would love to hear.
Although it can be hard to focus on business and to-do lists when the sun and salt air is beckoning outside, it really helps if you allow the seasonal changes to inspire your work. Bring in a little posy and set it on your desk, write a silly postcard and mail it to a friend, dress in an outfit you love, pick up a special iced drink on your break, do something creative or energizing on your commute like listening to an inspiring podcast or sketching the view outside your train window. Try TED Talks (find the audio podcasts here) for podcasts, take an inspiring e-course (you know I love this one), or read a great book (I’m reading this one right now).
Obviously I did not finish the site redesign over the weekend as I had hoped, but I will be taking my own advice today by putting on some of my favorite music and pouring myself a big iced coffee…and then gluing myself to my desk for a solid chunk of work time. But I did have a wonderfully full weekend with baby swim lessons, a trip to the farmer’s market and craft fair, bookshop browsing, plenty of iced coffee, out to a really lovely dinner, and a visit with Bixby’s sweet Great Grandma, so it was well worth skipping screen time! :) And besides, it’s all about balancing the work + play, inspiration and creation, right?
Okay, now I’ve blathered on long enough. What about you? Are you hard at work or hard at play? Making any fun plans? Any tips on squeezing the most out of this beautiful season?
