This morning I reached my maximum frustration tolerance: while I was desperately wrestling computer cords away from my cat to prevent the monitor from toppling over, I turned to see Bixby attempting to haul the (very tall and heavy) coat rack down on top of himself. I had already barricaded it with baskets borrowed from his room, see?
But did that deter him in any way? Why, of course not! This is Godzilla baby, after all! He simply flung the baskets aside and made a beeline for the forbidden coat tree. Oh, and see the ugly mess of shoes to the right? Yeah, he likes to eat those. On the upside, I’ve been wanting to change up this sadly neglected corner of my home for a long, long time and now I have a really good reason to tackle it.
Like, today.
And p.s., I will be operating on virtually no budget. Wish me luck!

I'm throwing out 50 things - join me!

Can’t wait to see what you do. I have a problem area like this as well. Shoes, jackets and purses are difficult to organize in an attractive way.
I had a similar problem and ended up making a shoe/coat rack myself (with a little help from hubby). It was really cheap and solved our storage problem. Here’s a link to it: http://www.livinginblog.com/2011/02/diy-shoe-coat-rack.html
Hope you have a nice easter celebration. Nina

Wow Nina, that looks AMAZING! I am totally impressed, and I fear whatever I end up doing as a quick fix this weekend will not look anywhere near as nice. I hope you enjoy your Easter too :) xo Laura
Ooh I can’t wait to see what you come up with. We have a similar problem-corner involving shoes. But no Godzilla baby to make us fix it:)

I totally understand! Some things just have to go away when our kids our little! Be encouraged, though, that they grow and learn better and you can bring things out again! Maybe you could borrow a dresser or another piece of furniture with doors on it for the shoes for now? I cannot wait to see what you come up with!

Tina – love the idea of using a piece of furniture with drawers for now…I’ll have to look/ask around and see what can be drummed up. And yes, this is only the latest thing to need to “disappear” – first to go were the glass doors on the cabinets in our living room! Thanks for your help, xo Laura
I will share this so you can learn from my mistake… Our 18-month-old went sleep-walking one night and up the front of her bureau which promptly crashed down upon her. Now, thankfully for cheap furniture, it was lightweight, she was bonelessly asleep and no harm done.
However, now *anything* put up was always affixed to the wall (or in the case of the Christmas tree, to an eyebolt into a ceiling joist). So a coat/shoe arrangement, especially if it has tempting oddments on top, which you just *know* your kid is going to want to explore, should probably be screwed to a wall joist. Doesn’t matter if it’s a gorgeous antique, in my opinion it’s worth never hearing that *crash* again!
Jane D – You are so right! It is vitally important to make sure any heavy/tall furniture is properly secured. So glad your daughter was okay, how scary! xo Laura
