Survey Says…(& Blog News)

February 25, 2011

in Blogs

Happy weekend sweet ones! And thank you so very much for coming here to see me this week :) Before we all go off to do our thing this weekend, I wanted to share a few behind the scenes goings-on – some bloggy news if you will…

An inviting breakfast spot from Serena & Lily

First off, thank you so much to those of you who completed my first-ever survey! It was great to get some insight into what is working well and what could use a bit of tuning up. It wasn’t surprising to see that nearly all of you love the images and interior inspiration posts, but I was interested (and flattered) to find that most of you (74%) like seeing photos of my own home.

There seems to be some division on the subject of baby stuff – some want more, others want none. Gah! So I will have to take the reins here and say um, I have a baby! So there will necessarily be some baby-business going on around here from time to time. But if that’s not your cuppa tea, you have my full permission to zone out and skip over those posts. Okay, moving on…

Makes me want a globe collection for Bixby’s room :) via Design*Sponge

There are a few neat things I will be sharing soon, including 2 new monthly features: a style/outfit idea post and a “get the look” budget decorating post, so watch out for both of those in March! I have also decided to start a new Friday tradition, begun by Soule Mama, called {this moment} where I will simply share a photograph capturing a moment from my week, no words. You can look for that to begin next Friday :) I have a few more ideas, but I want to save something for later, ha!

I crazy-love this table, via Design*Sponge

And finally, I am planning a blog redesign for later this year and I’m really excited about it! At the moment I am still gathering inspiration + ideas, and I would love to hear your input as I get started on this process. Is there anything you wish for this site, design-wise?

So with all of that out of the way, let me wish you the happiest of weekends! xoxo Laura

Anthology Issue No. 2

February 24, 2011

in Books & Mags

I subscribed to Anthology Magazine before the first issue went to press, and when it arrived in my mailbox this fall I was thrilled with it. From the quality of paper (thick, satisfying to flip) to the size (a tad bit smaller than the average magazine, and thus more chic) to the gorgeous photography and excellent writing, founders Anh-Minh Le and Meg Mateo Ilasco outdid themselves. I was just checking their blog because I’ve been itching to see what is in store for issue #2, and lo and behold:

Ta-da! It should be mailing out soon, but for now we can whet our appetites with this little sneak peek. The theme of the issue is “Where the Past Meets the Present”…

I am over the moon to hear that one of my favorite stylists, Pia Jane Bijkerk, worked on a story in the issue. And there is a cocktail party in the home of another stylist I adore, Mrs. Lilien. Swoon. Do you subscribe? It seemed a little pricey, but I subscribed when I was feeling more flush than I am now (ahem) and I am so glad I did. I love getting good mail! Don’t you? It makes the whole day a little sunnier :)

Groovy

in Art

Hello there, is it mid-week already? How lovely! Today I was browsing my Etsy favorites and I realized that I have never posted about Matte Stephens before, even though he is one of my top 5 favorite artists working right now – how could this be? And on top of that, even though I am so enamored with his work, I have yet to buy anything myself! Gah.

Well, I will rectify at least the first of those two things right now. If you are not already familiar (are you? Do you love Matte, too?) Matte Stephens is a Portland, Oregon-based painter who has created illustrations for everyone from Chronicle Books and Sunset Magazine to Disney, Herman Miller, and Uppercase, in addition to offering prints and original paintings and sculptures for sale in his Etsy shop.

I love that he is inspired by the style of mid-century modern artists and designers, yet manages to feel fresh and new and completely original. Also, this is definitely work that appeals to guys and gals, so if you are sharing a home Matte’s art could be just the thing to avoid fighting about vintage rock posters vs. dreamy pastel ice cream photography ;)

I think part of the reason I haven’t purchased a print myself is the simple fact that I love everything Matte creates, and every time I am going to buy art I become paralyzed by the choices!

Ah well, one of these days Matte, maybe that cute owl will be mine!

Doesn’t he have a smart workspace? If you want more behind-the-scenes peeks into Matte’s life and work, you can follow along with his blog or check him out on Flickr.

So, what do you think? Is this your cuppa? Which is your favorite piece?

Ah, a fresh new week is upon us and I am feeling inspired and ready to go after my long weekend! What about you – did you have an extra day off? Do anything fun? It was pretty low-key around here, we went out for coffees and cake, made Italian dinners, and continued baby-proofing (I’ll have to share a picture of the “baby couch” I created in our living room!), which seems to be an endless process. I thought we could kick off the week here with some gorgeous imagery from the creative and talented Swedish photographer Pia Ulin, sound good?

I would love to sleep in this bedroom with the ball gown hanging on the wall and fire crackling in the fireplace, it’s got that old world faded-glamour vibe down pat. How creative to hang a large mirror in place of a headboard – I think it totally works, what about you? I adore the old smoky looking mirror placed on the mantle, too, it seems just right positioned a little off-center with a few candlesticks in front.

Or perhaps this one is more your cup of tea, clean and simple with just a few whimsical touches. Note the shoes stored in the Lucite nightstand and bowl full of strawberries and cream waiting on top, ooh la la!

Oh my, again with the lovely mirrors! I think I need more pretty mirrors in my home. And a little stool with a stack of soft towels, big squares of Provence soap and a couple of hours to zone out in the tub :)

I admire the sense of fantasy and surrealism in Pia’s work. These are the kind of images I would have loved to tear out of magazines and tape to my wall in high school… A half-eaten cookie and a gold tea cup, a lady in a fancy white dress and elbow-length gloves stalking off into the crumbling mansion…

A flourishing greenhouse in the middle of nowhere…

A room filled with white balloons… Pia’s photographs have really have my creative juices flowing this morning, and I hope they’ve inspired you a bit, too! Pia Ulin has worked with a wide range of clients, from Ikea to Elle Decoration, and has a rich body of work to explore in her online portfolio, you can see it here.

So, happy start of the week to you my dear friends, I would love to hear from you today! What has been inspiring you lately?
