Hello dears, how are you doing? I’ve been busy here in babyland for the past week, and honestly the days are beginning to blur together. I have been lucky to have my sweet husband at home with me, and we’ve been enjoying this “portable” phase of babyhood by toting Bix along with us to a different café each day – a fav so far in case you are ever in Providence has been Olga’s Cup + Saucer, where we sit in their delightfully leafy garden and I sip my highly addictive Café Mexicana in a giant bowl-like cup. But on to the subject of this post: I am heading back to school this fall!
You may remember that I started taking interior design classes last fall…well, I have decided against pursuing interior design further. Although I enjoyed my classes and I am passionate about interior design, after a lot of thought I have realized that it’s just not for me as a profession – I am perfectly happy keeping it a personal passion. And especially now that I am the mama to a little one, I am looking for a path that will give me a lot more flexibility in my work environment. So what am I taking next? (drumroll, please!)
I have signed up for my first web design course at RISD…wish me luck! Web design is something that I never thought I would find interesting, but since starting my first blog two years ago I have really enjoyed teaching myself coding and generally geeking out on my website. I am taking this slowly: I am at the point in my life where I do not need to rush into any long, expensive programs without feeling 150% sure that it is something I want to do. So I am beginning with just one class, and we’ll take it from there.
Throughout the fall I will check in with you here from time to time about my class, whether it is to share something interesting I’ve learned, or just to get a little support from all of you as I attempt to balance my coursework with new-mamahood – and I encourage any of you who are doing something similar (going back to school, changing careers, or trying to learn a new skill or craft) to check in here as well, and maybe we can all support one another! First request for support? I have exactly 3 weeks to learn how to use my breast pump…otherwise going to class will prove very problematic!!

best of luck to you! I totally understand…wrestled and wrestled with “do I go back to school for design?” questions for awhile. So happy you’ve come to a decision you feel good about!
You go girl!!!

Thanks Mary! What did you decide? Did you end up going to design school?
that’s great laura! good luck. i’m at a crossroads too professionally. i just can’t decide which way to turn next! as for expressing milk…make sure you drink a lot, do it in a warm place and make sure you’re calm (just as if you were breastfeeding). if bixby is next to you it will make it easier! i used to express even at work, in the toilets because my then employers didn’t think i needed a place to do that! i used to throw away that milk but at least it kept the flow coming.
Thanks for the tips :) I tried using the pump again this morning to no avail…I think I’m just stressing myself out about it, and that probably doesn’t help!
Hi there!!!
I´m glad you are trying to combine everything in your life. In my case, I never went back to work and I´ve decided to paint more after Lara was born and stay home with here. So I designed my web page and I go to watercolour class only once a week, but I´m happy with it.
I couldn´t work from home with my last job even though we tried that but I actually really want to find a magazine where to write articles from home now.
That coffee shop sounds great!!! oh and about the pump, I never used it, it wasn´t for me, it´s kind of personal, and I realized the old manual way worked better for me!
Good luck with that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats on deciding to go back to school! That seems pretty brave of you, especially since you’ve got a new baby to deal with as well! Good luck & I hope the class goes well :)

Oh, wishing you so much luck Laura! So sorry you are having trouble with the pump. What kind of pump is it? If you can breast feed you TOTALLY can best that pump…

Ha ha! I have an Avent (electric, duo), and I’ve had no issues breastfeeding, but I haven’t been able to get my milk to let down with the pump! I’ll keep trying…maybe a beer next time ;)
I love Olga’s!– and they’re soup-bowl coffees:)
And my fiance taught a flash class at RISD’s cont. ed and said the whole department seemed pretty great! So funny, I was looking through their catalogue last night for a licensing class… Its in the air, I guess:)
