Basement Makeover

April 22, 2010

in My Home

Okay, I promised pictures and here they are! Last weekend B and I covered the dark red basement with a fresh coat of paint, and did some furniture rearranging as well. As a reminder, here is what the basement looked like before:

The dark red made the basement feel cramped and the low ceilings feel even lower. We left the wainscoting and ceiling white, and put a fresh lick of Woodlawn Blue (from Benjamin Moore) on the upper walls, and now…

The whole space feels so much larger and more welcoming now, don’t you think? We also moved the sofa and entertainment center to the other side of the room, which I feel is a better use of the space.

The bedspread is this one that I was coveting from Dwell Studio for Target – and it is lovely and soft in person! I would still like some new shams for the pillows, and art for the walls…and perhaps new lampshades as well?

And now that the sofa has been moved to one side of the room, we have an extra space opened up behind – I would like to use this area eventually as a crafting space and play area for our baby :)

So, what do you think? What else do you think this area needs? We use it all of the time to watch movies, and when we have guests, this is also where they stay. I would love to hear your thoughts!

I love the color and the bedspread! It doesn’t look like a basement at all anymore! Great work!

Oh, wow, what a transformation. It’s much better. You did an awesome job. I love the light airy feeling and all the colors you decorated with. I like the wall paint color too. That open space definately looks like a good space for a crafting and sewing table or some bookcases if you don’t already have some of those somewhere.

Wow! What a difference! It looks SO much more welcoming, I agree. Some more touches of yellow in the sofa ares via cushions or vases or artwork etc would help bring the whole space together. But it is looking great so far!

Oh! I love it! It looks SO fantastic with the new paint color & the way you rearranged it hun. Love it….I think some curtains behind the bed( as if there were two windows, instead of one) would be lovely…and something larger and airier (with wood tones matching your lovely side tables) would be pretty for the tv. Such a great job Laura, I adore that color. It changes it so much & makes it so welcoming and lovely.

Hi Laura, this is a beautiful transformation! The space looks so cozy and relaxing. I love the bedspread and the blue walls. Some artwork on the walls could add a nice touch.

Love the changes you made!!!
I think it needs a few paintings on the walls, something fresh and light and soft, like a watercolour, for example…
=)
Have a great weekend!

Love the pics of your basement. It’s so bright, fresh and airy!

I would love to finish our basement, but I’m afraid the ceiling height might be too low. Are you able to tell me the floor to ceiling height in your basement?

Thanks! Love it!
