September 2009

Ah, it’s the weekend! I am trying to prioritize what to do with my time over the weekend, as I have a lot I would love to accomplish, as well as some fun events I would like to attend. What about you? Does it feel as if people are beginning to get busier these days? Like the world – at least here in New England – is waking up from the sleepy days of summer. What’s going on in your part of the world? No matter where you are, I am sure you will appreciate a few luscious images from the new Blissliving Home Fall/Winter collection…

I love how they used inspiration boards to style some of the pages from their catalog. I don’t know about you, but it makes me want to get creative and play around with colors and textures…and then hop into a big, super-soft and comfy bed!

Happy weekend, sweet friends! And thank you so, so much for spending a bit of time out of your week with me here!!

p.s. – There will be no Sweet Obsessions this week. The day got away from me! Sorry!

Have you heard of the Enormous Tiny Art Show?? If not, you should go check it out right now. Seriously. The Nahcotta Gallery in New Hampshire curates a biannual show including hundreds of pieces of original art all sized under 10×10 inches, and also offers all of the artwork for sale on their website. This is such a wonderful resource for those of us wanting to start an art collection on a small budget – the show always includes an amazingly diverse range of work, and because the pieces are small in scale, the prices really are quite affordable for original art, with many works priced in the $100 range.

Also, if you happen to be within driving distance of New Hampshire, why not take a little day trip to the gallery this weekend? It’s the last weekend of the show – and you never know, maybe you will see me there! Lol! Honestly though, I am going to try to make it because it would be totally awesome to score an original piece of artwork to hang in my new home!! Here is but a small taste of the lineup:

And if I may get up on my soapbox for a minute, I just want to reiterate how important I feel it is to support independent artists by purchasing original works of art. We live in such a mass-produced world these days, for better or for worse (or both), that sometimes it can be kind of a bummer to look around and realize that everything in your environment rolled off a factory line. But by supporting independent artists and crafters who are taking the time to create something original and unique with their own hands, you are not only supporting that artist’s passion and livelihood, but you are also bringing a little handmade goodness into your own life. Okay, I will now step down from the soapbox! But really, bravo to the Nahcotta Gallery for bringing together such a wonderful group of artists – I really do hope that I can carve out time this weekend to drive out and see the show!

Oh my. Excuse me while I lift my jaw off the table – it’s just that the new collection of home decor, clothes and shoes from UK-based Plümo is simply amazing, and I’ve been sitting here drooling over my keyboard trying to decide which photos to include in this post. Far too many, as it turns out – I literally could have included every single item from their shop, but I was able to edit myself a bit in the end. Plümo has the same exquisite, worldly-feminine kind of vibe as Anthropologie here in the States, but with their own unique flair. And fortunately (or unfortunately, in the case of my wallet) they do ship internationally. Let’s take a look…

Don’t you love that crescent-shaped leather cushion? And the curvaceous coffee pot? The clothes look amazing, too – delicate lacy boleros, silky dresses and all sorts of other goodies for dressing up to the nines. Coming out of the summer months, which are all about casual, outdoor living, I am finding myself looking forward to getting all gussied up and going out on the town this fall and winter – do you know what I mean? And having gorgeously long, flame-red hair like the model in these photos wouldn’t hurt, either! LOL

Picture 11

Some of these things are so unique and lovely, I am very tempted to order something even with the steep cost of shipping to the US! I could see that chubby little faux fur jacket being a staple for tossing over party dresses throughout the fall and winter. See? the rationalizing has already begun! And this whole shop obsession began with those shoes (thanks to Melis), which could jazz up just about any outfit. *sigh*

And then there are the cozy knitted slippers and chunky boots and perfectly roomy leather bags – so unique and lovely, don’t you agree? If you haven’t pined enough, go to the Plümo site for more temptation inspiration.

Today I am feeling inspired by the whole idea of warm, clean, inviting Scandinavian style. Light woods, bold, graphic patterns and clean lines. I know that spring is the traditional time to tackle big cleaning and decluttering projects, but for me fall has always been the time I am more inspired to pare down and reassess my belongings. My “office” has been at the bottom of the list for organizing and arranging since we moved in – there are still a few boxes and junk piles on the floor! I would love to create a warm, serene feeling in my home office inspired by the Scandinavian design sensibility, and I have tried to capture a bit of the essence I am after below. I hope you enjoy it!

To me, the kitchen really is the heart of the home. It’s where friends and family tend to congregate, and it is one of the most heavily used rooms in the house. As most of you know, I have just purchased my first home – and one of the many items on my giant list of things to do is revamp the kitchen. I’m not talking about major renovation here – that would be unnecessary (thank goodness) not to mention beyond our budget – think instead, mini-makeover. First, I will give you a peek into my kitchen so you can see what I’m starting with, and then I will share some of my favorite kitchen inspiration images and you can tell me what you think – sound good?

Picture 19

So – there is my kitchen! I actually feel a bit funny putting this photo out there because I didn’t “stage” it at all, the light is less than ideal, and it’s at a funny angle. But hey, you get the idea! The wall color is currently a very deep burnt orange/rust. The cabinets are made of some sort of synthetic that is impossible to paint over, so those must remain white. The countertops, which are granite with flecks of gray, black and white, and the appliances will all stay. Consider this the “before”!

The inspiration for my kitchen makeover began with the photo of the room above (top left) spied in this month’s Makeover special from Canadian House & Home Magazine. I love the rich lilac-gray wall color paired with crisp white and black. I think this would work really well with the granite counters and perma-white cabinets already in my kitchen – what do you think? I would also love to swap out my current cabinet knobs and bin pulls with sturdier versions. And then it’s time to finish the look with some gorgeous accessories…

I would love to bring in a rich variety of textures: natural slate, zinc, galvanized metal, smooth wood, creamy pottery, dark woven baskets, and a row of potted herbs in the window sill; all keeping within a palette of gray, black, white, cream, silver and the warm brown tones of natural wood & wicker. And can I share a little fantasy for the future? If I ever am able to afford it, I would LOVE to open up the wall to the right of the kitchen and put in french doors leading onto a little deck in the back yard. Sigh. Maybe someday…

So, as you may have noticed, I am focusing more and more on decor and design here on Lolalina. Since I will (no doubt) have many home projects of my own to report on in the coming months in addition to inspiration from my design courses, I just wanted to give you a little “heads up” that I have decided to shelve my little travel column, Away We Go…, which I had been putting up on Tuesdays, for the time being. I just have so many home-related thoughts buzzing about right now, that it only makes sense to focus on that!

Okay! With that out of the way, what are your thoughts on my kitchen ideas? I would love to hear from you!
