A Collection Of Stylist Tips & Tricks

in Design & Decor

I love noticing the little styling details that go into the photos of my favorite interiors – stylists work a bit of magic, don’t you think? I have been collecting images for a while now that illustrate some of my favorite styling tips, and I thought it would be fun to share them. These are all of the little ideas that I would love to incorporate into my own home eventually, in one way or another! Let’s start with some bedroom ideas, shall we?

In the bedroom, it’s all about displaying the prettiest little things you have – not everything, just a few little things. Jewelry spilling out of a teacup, a few scarves and necklaces hung from decorative hooks or salvaged knobs, your favorite dress or blouse hung on the back of the door. I also love the idea of having a large mirror propped casually against the wall – or, if you have a mirror above your dresser, tuck a few vintage postcards and photos into the frame to add a dash of romance and personality.

Aside from a new quilt or set of sheets here and there, my bedroom has been sadly neglected until now. But when we move into our new house (in 17 days!!!), creating a cozy and welcoming bedroom retreat will be my top priority. If you are moving into a new place, I think it is so important to get at least one room finished and feeling good as soon as possible. You need to be able to come home and decompress, and having one room where there are no boxes or unfinished projects staring at you is such a help!

Often, I think all you need to do to style a space is move around things you already have  – something as simple as rearranging your books or dishes so that like colors are clustered together can have a big visual impact. When I am shopping, I want to try to remember to purchase certain things in multiples, especially when I come across a good deal! Some things just look better when they are uniform: magazine boxes, bud vases and candle holders immediately spring to mind. Even if you buy them at different times, or collect vintage items, if you can remember to only choose things in one color or material, you will end up with a beautiful collection instead of a random hodgepodge!

I love looking for unique ways to display photos, artwork and mementos. Lately I have been drawn to the arty, bohemian feel of photos and ephemera taped right to the wall – especially if the wall happens to be a rich, dramatic color! I would also really like to hang a big salon-style grouping of art and photos in mismatched frames in the office of our new house. Ah, but there are so many things I want to do! Like…

…Wallpaper! I admit I am a bit frightened by wallpaper. Actually hanging the wallpaper, to be exact. Doesn’t “hanging” make it sound so easy? Oh yes, just hang it up, no problem. But then there is the sloppy wallpaper paste and air bubbles to iron out and patterns that need to line up exactly. Have you ever put up wallpaper in your home? I would love to hear about your experience if you have! I am thinking of wallpapering around the fireplace in our living/dining area (just like in the top photo, but with different paper), and possibly one wall in the bedroom as well. Any input would be greatly appreciated!

And finally, just for fun – have you ever considered writing out a quote you love or a few meaningful words on a window or wall? I see this from time to time in decor mags, and I actually really like it. I’m not so sure about the giant quote stenciled on the wall in the first photo, but I love Pia’s elegant handwriting on the french doors in the second photo! And an easy way to add a little romantic touch like this would be to write on a vintage chalkboard like Victoria has done. What do you think? Would you ever write on your walls or windows? I think if you have beautiful handwriting, why not?

Well, I hoped you’ve enjoyed this little collection, and I would love to hear your thoughts on styling! And don’t forget, my giveaway from All Modern is running all week long, so if you haven’t entered yet click here!

I love this post on styling. I wish that I didn’t use so much of my space for function and could use more for beauty. This inspires me to be sure that in our new place there is a place for everything and I can display the things I love. I am so taken with the quote on the blue painted wall . As a writer, I love word art and I would LOVE to have a favorite quote painted on one wall. What a great idea! So do you style professionally???

I definitely agree that you need to get at least one room settled when you moved in. We moved in two years ago shortly before I had my son, and I was adamant that we finish his room before he was born! It’s still (unfortunately) the only really finished room! Once he was born, priorities shifted dramatically!
